Makola Market – Charm doesn’t work here.

The Makola Market is in the center of Accra and sells just about everything from fruit to electronics. The market was constructed in 1924 and soon became the social epicenter and economic hub of the city. in 1979 the government in all its wisdom decided to demolish the market, thinking it would improve the economy. . There was apparently some thought behind this devastating decision.

The authorities at the time believed that some of the market women were selling products that were banned in Ghana. By their reasoning this was having a devastating effect on Ghana’s economy. Incidentally many of the vendors are women. Fortunately the market was rebuilt. Even Anthony Bourdan came to the market on an edition of the travel show and sampled some local wares.

A couple of point to bear in mind. This place is huge so i would recommend coming with a guide. If you come alone then be wary of going down to many side streets. Crime does exist here. Do not take pictures without asking first as people don’t like it. Don’t think a charm offensive is going to work either. It does not. Top tip: if you want the best view then the only place to have it is on the top floor of the car park.

I came here as part of my day tour of Accra.
