Cultural Center Kumasi – Why they wont open the treasure bag.

The Center aims to showcase Ghanaian culture, with particular emphasis on the Ashanti Kingdom. To this end it houses the Prempeh II Jubilee museum, which is basically a small courtyard with artifacts on various glassed walls.

One of the most fascinating pieces of the collection is the 300 years old antique treasure bag which belonged to Okomfo Anokye. He apparently barred anyone from opening it. How does one endure such suspense? There is also a replica of the golden stool (mentioned in the Mahniya Palace Post). There is a small entrance fee and you cannot take pictures inside. I did get the old pots and pans which were used in olden days before the ban was pointed out.

Fortunately you can take pics around the beautifully manicured gardens and there are several fascinating statues relating to Ashanti ideology. Here’s a nice calm look we should all aspire to.

You can also check out this rather gorgeous old car which was the first official car used by Prempeh ll in 1935.

There are craft workshops on site where you can experience first hand such skills as brass making, woodwork and batik dying. Unfortunately I was pushed for time but certainly recommend you don’t miss the gift shop. There is a staggering amount of souvenirs and best of all you can look at your leisure.
