SWOPA – If only there had been the time

SWOPA which stands for Sirigu Women’s Organization for Pottery and Art. As you would expect this beautiful center is situated in Sirigu. One thing you can’t help noticing when you arrive are the stunning wall paintings.

The center was founded in 1997 by an inspiring lady called Madame Melanie Kasise, who was skilled in pottery and used it to pay for her education. Not content to leave it at that she founded SWOPA to encourage local women to share their skills be it in weaving, pottery etc.

Today it has 400 members.

You can visit the center and time permitting, which we didn’t have take part in a workshop and make your own piece of art. Sadly we were behind schedule so we only had time to visit the store where works from the local artisans are for sale.

This was my kind of store.
