Tongo Village – Check out the chief who has 23 wives.
And he looked pretty relaxed despite having fathered more than 100 children.
Still the main reason for coming to this rather remarkable village is not the chief, but the extraordinary architecture. Surrounded by the Tengzung hills you can look out at a rather remarkable sweeping landscape of rock formations which include dwellings and shrines.
The shrines are a magnet for people not just from Ghana but also neighboring countries who believe they have a sacred power to provide guidance to whatever problems you may have in life. I visited this amazing place as part of my tour which had been arranged by Jolanika tours.
Arriving on motor bike with my guide Ganu we were welcomed by the chief and what turned out to be his 22nd child who showed us around the village.
We started with the view from the top where we discovered that the top of the homes are flat because people sleep there at night. There is no electricity.
We then proceeded through an amazing labyrinth of narrow alleys where people were just getting on with their end of day tasks.
If i I understood correctly most of the families here are from the chief. We then climbed the hill to visit one of the most important shrines; The Tengzug Shrine.
It was once used by slaves who were trying to evade capture. Today the shrine is traditionally used for sacrifices. Fortunately we were spared any such event and you can only enter the shrine if you disrobe from the waist up which might work for them.
But certainly not for me. .Before we left we were shown what was once the school carved out of the rock.
